The summer may be over but I’d be the first to admit that I am secretly anticipating the joys of autumn! The beautiful changing colour of the leaves, the crisp air and an excuse to break out those comfy knitted jumpers I have been missing. Not only does autumn mean all of these wonderful things but more importantly Oktoberfest celebrations are afoot!
For those of you who don’t know Oktoberfest is the largest Volksfest (a combination of a beer festival and travelling funfair) and is held in Munich every year. Initially the event took place during the 16 days running up to the first Sunday in October, however in recent years this has been increased to either 17 or 18 days if the first Sunday of October falls on the 1st or 2nd of the month.
Munich’s Oktoberfest is an extremely popular event with over 6 million people attending from all over the world. Unsurprisingly other cities around the world have also put their own spin on this fun event and host their very own German inspired celebrations. This week we have been taking a look at our favourite authentic Oktoberfest celebrations for you to explore in the UK!
London Oktoberfest – Bavarian Beerhouse
Since debuting in 2004 ‘Oktoberfest in London’ at the Bavarian Beerhouse has become a great success. As the venue is an original Bavarian restaurant they certainly know how to celebrate this proud tradition. The German staff are dedicated to ensuring that their event reflects a true ‘Munich style’ Bierfest. Between 23rd September – 31st October you can enjoy full flavoured aromas of Germany’s top beer brands, popular Oktoberfest specialities such as sausages, pork shank and dumplings, all served by the charming waiters and waitresses, who of course, are dressed in traditional Dirndl dresses and Lederhosen!
Edinburgh Oktoberfest
Celebrate Bavarian culture at the iconic Edinburgh Oktoberfest. Running between 7th – 11th of October in the Princes Street Gardens, located in the heart of the city. As well as a large variety of different beers to enjoy, there will also be traditional German food and wonderful live music! Want to bring the family along? Children are welcome to attend a special lunch on Sunday so everyone can experience Bavarian culture for a day!
Liverpool Oktoberfest
Taking place between 14th – 18th October, 6,000 party goers are expected at this year’s Liverpool Oktoberfest. Organisers have transported the beer, band and food all the way from Germany and anticipate this to be the ‘Liverpool party of the year!’ They have even brewed their own Oktoberfest Beer and shipped it all the way from Bavaria! It is described as a fresh golden lager with a touch of sweetness and a strong and slightly bitter aftertaste of the hops. Why not head there and try it yourself?
Birmingham Oktoberfest
Running from 14-18th October, Birmingham Oktoberfest will be hosted at the picturesque Cannon Hill Nature Park, only two miles from the city centre. Entrance is free on the Wednesday with the other days costing between £5 – £10 or you can pay for a package deal for £13.50 which includes food, beer and a seat reservation. Why not make the most of the night and stay in nearby Stanbrook Abbey? Newly renovated with 57 bedrooms this tranquil escape is the perfect destination after a long night of celebrations.
Hampshire Oktoberfest
Taking place over the weekend of the 10th and 11th October, Hampshire Oktoberfest will boast over 150 different beers, ciders and wines as well as numerous food stalls at cater for all tastes. There will be two stages featuring live music, as well as a giant TV screening the Rugby World Cup so those who enjoy the sport won’t have to worry about missing out on all the latest action!
The Halo Oktoberfest – Bristol
For those who like to combine sport and leisure, the Halo Oktoberfest may be just what you are looking for! Held at Ashton Court, this Oktoberfest cycling hybrid consists of a solo, pairs and team relay race held along the 10km long single track, all weather course. Keen cyclists to jump on their bikes and take part in either their 8 hour event or one of the 4 hour events they are holding. With so many fantastic Oktoberfest celebrations up and down the country getting a taste of Munich no longer means boarding a plane! So grab you stein, strap on your Lederhosen and get ready to dance the night away to the sound of Oompah music! Zum Woh!
