Scotland’s answer to America’s iconic Route 66 is here and receiving huge attention from all over the world! Known as the North Coast 500 (or NC500 for short), this stunning route runs from Inverness and goes across the West Highlands to Applecross then up to the coast, taking in the spectacular scenery. From here the route winds up to Durness and over to Caithness and John O’Groats, before joining the A9 from Wick and heading back south to the Highland capital.
With so much to see from beautiful mountains, breath-taking beaches, wonderful woodland and stunning architecture you will really be spoilt for choice when you set off on your Scottish adventures. Ackergill Tower
Whilst you are in the Highlands, make sure you pay a visit to the iconic Ackergill Tower. Steeped in history and boasting awe-inspiring architecture, this baronial castle has a unique character and sits in an enviable position overlooking the rugged North Sea. The tower was modernised in 1845, with the cap house being restored, a new wing being added and the house refurbished. In addition to its fascinating history, Ackergill Tower also proudly holds the title of being the first venue to receive wallpapers in Scotland!

John O’ Groats
Whilst exploring the tip of Scotland, take the opportunity to visit this quaint village, the most northerly place on the British mainland. Explore the town, walk along the stunning coast, discover the bays and beaches and try your hand at a spot of nature watching. Don’t forget to get a picture next to the iconic John O’Groats sign before you head off on your adventures!

Orkney Islands
Take to the waves and head out to this dramatic collection of 70 islands, just a short ferry ride away from the Highlands. Enjoy beautiful scenery, white sandy beaches, an array of wildlife and a rich heritage.

Ben Hope
This isolated peak provides a wonderful viewpoint and is the most northerly of the Munros. The climb to the top is short but steep and gives a great introduction to the vast countryside and wilderness of the extreme North. On a clear day the view from the summit includes the Pentland Firth, Loch Eriboll, the nearby mountains of Arkle and Foinaven and even the Orkney Islands.

Beaches
The beaches of the Highlands offer something for everyone, whether you are looking for secluded sands, incredible surfing opportunities or inspiring natural beauty. You can even find a few unexpected secrets and discoveries along the way. At Achmelvich Bay you have the opportunity to explore Hermit’s Castle, one of the tiniest castles in Europe. You can even swap the road for a deserted beach for the night and wake up to the sound of crashing waves.

Smoo Cave
Your journey along the North Coast 500 will take you through glorious landscapes framed by ancient geology - Smoo Cave is just one example of this. This spectacular sea cave is set into the limestone cliffs in Sutherland, just a mile to the east of the town of Durness. Perfect for those that enjoy exploring, this cave can be navigated via foot or by boat.

Old Pulteney Distillery
One of the most northerly working distilleries on the Scottish mainland and one of only a few distilleries that still bottles by hand, the Old Pulteney Distillery is a must see for those that enjoy the odd dram of whisky. Famous for its 21 year old Single Malt, have a tour of the historic distillery and learn everything you’ll ever need to know about one of Scotland’s biggest exports!

Inverness
Sitting just south of the Highlands, Inverness is a thriving city with plenty to see and do. The city boasts a number of historic buildings as well as an abundance of shops. With a great selection of places to eat and several open spaces to enjoy, this quaint city has a lot to offer and is compact and easy to get around.
